The paint surface of your car is the largest and most easily noticed surface of your car. It is the surface that most detailers take the most pride in and the surface that takes the most time and effort to correct. The best way to avoid spending hours upon hours of your time and effort removing swirls, scratches, and imperfections is to keep your paint surface protected!
Paint surface protection products are split into 3 categories:
Car Waxes:
These are usually naturally sourced pastes that you spread over your car. They are usually comprised mostly of carnauba, a substance that forms on the leaves of Brazilian Palms to protect the leaves. They are easy to apply, provide a warm gloss, and last usually about 3 weeks to a month.
Paint Sealants:
These are synthetic, man-made car waxes. Rather than using naturally forming carnauba, they use synthetic polymers that mimic the same shell of protection that carnauba forms. These polymers are designed to be tougher and last longer than carnauba, so paint sealants will generally last longer than traditional waxes. Paint sealants are just as easy to apply as traditional waxes, but they last longer (3-6 months) and provide a more "artificial" gloss that some detailers don't like as much as traditional waxes.
Ceramic Coatings:
Ceramic coatings are formulated using extremely advanced chemistry and technology. Their main ingredient is SiO2 (silica), which is extremely hard once it has cured and has an incredibly high surface tension. The shell of protection they create is much harder than the gel-like shell created by a wax or a sealant, giving the surface an increased level of protection. The surface tension it creates prevents water from bonding to the surface entirely, causing it to bead up and roll off easily. The most notable characteristic of ceramic coatings is that they can last years, not weeks or months like waxes or sealants! They have a unique, reflective gloss that gives your car the appearance of being coated with glass! They are much more difficult to apply and any mistakes in application are not easily reversed, so the learning curve is a bit steep. However, for those that want to maximize the protection and minimize how often you need to reapply, ceramic coatings are the best choice!
