Backing plates are an essential component of the machine polishing process. The machine supplies the power and the motion, the polish supplies most of the abrasion and correcting power, the pad supplies some of the abrasion and a medium for the polish, and the backing plate is necessary to both provide a way for the pad and polish to harness the polisher's power and give the pad a stable platform to keep it from bunching up while you polish.
